1. Automatic vessel occluder and blood flow telemetry system for chronic animal studies. This system is a portable, animal-backpack carried, apparatus for periodically occluding arteries for heart and other organ system research. It provides programmable occlusion intervals from 14 seconds to 16 hours and occlusion durations adjustable over a 10 second to 10 minute range by pressurizing an implanted plastic cuff encircling the artery. Occlusion generation is verified by measurement and recording of arterial blood flow by an included pulse Doppler ultrasonic radio telemetry flowmeter.
2. Mechanical stimulus generators for sensory mechanoreceptor and neuromuscular research. This instrument employs a displacement measurement and feedback circuit to control an electromechanical vibrator. Precise linear displacements of an output shaft are generated over a 0-1.0 millimeter range with one micron resolution. Frequency range is 0-to 250 Hertz. The output displacement waveform is determined by external electrical input signals from a function generator or computer control system.
Higher power versions that generate 5 kg of force at 0-1 Hz and 500 gm at 0-50 Hz over a 3 cm range have also been developed. The generators can also operate in a constant-force mode. These systems are employed in neuromuscular control research and are also used to generate programmable airflows and pressures in pulmonary research.
3. Incremental flowmeter for urine output measurement and other collectable liquid flow rates. This device has been developed for renal research. It measures the volume flow rate of any collectable liquid from 0 to 0.25 liters/minute. Resolution is 0.05 ml.
4. Cardiovascular and neurological research radio telemetry systems for measurement and transmission of blood flow, temperature, heart dimensions, arterial pressure, and electrocardiogram. Non-telemetry, Doppler ultrasonic pulsed blood flowmeters are also available. These have several features that are not generally available, such as variable, high-power crystal excitation, pulse repetition rates variable in one microsecond steps, and synchronization of multiple flowmeters at distances up to 100 meters for interference elimination.
